1. Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), Albert Park
MSAC Aquatics is a is a one-stop destination for swimmers of all levels.
With a whopping 7 pools (a 50m outdoor pool, 50m indoor pool, lap pool, hydrotherapy pool, diving pool, multi-purpose pool and wave pool), as well as diving boards, a spa, sauna and steam room, there’s truly something for everyone.
So, whether you’re a seasoned semi-pro, a casual after-work lap swimmer or looking to host the most thrilling dive-bomb competition the city’s ever seen – MSAC has got you covered.
2. Brighton Baths, Brighton
The iconic Brighton Baths are an undisputed Melbourne institution.
Residents have been enjoying the bracing sea waves since 1881, and cold-water swimming enthusiasts (affectionately known as the ‘Icebergers’) bravely take the plunge all year round.
Featuring Olympic-size sea baths and Victoria’s only private beach and boardwalk, this is more than a swimming pool. It’s a way of life.
3. Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC), Bentleigh East
A world-class facility, GESAC in Bentleigh East is a go-to for serious swimmers who can choose one of the 8 lap lanes in the 50m outdoor pool for their daily exercise.
But there’s plenty of fun to be had here, too.
With an impressive aquatic play area known as ‘Pirate’s Cove’ and multiple thrilling water slides, there’s no shortage of ways to keep the kids entertained. Just be warned: they may not want to leave!
4. St Kilda Sea Baths, St Kilda
Located beside Melbourne’s iconic St Kilda Beach, St Kilda Sea Baths is the perfect escape when you need a little time to yourself.
The heated 25m indoor pool, filled with therapeutic seawater, invites you to float your worries away beneath a wide, sunlit skylight. And with its attractive bay views, the lounge area is an ideal spot to unwind after a refreshing swim.
You might even indulge in a coffee or a spot of brunch afterwards, with St Kilda’s vibrant café scene right on the doorstep.
5. Harold Holt Swim Centre, Glen Iris
The striking mid-century design of Harold Holt Swim Centre gives it a unique character. In fact, the bold, concrete-heavy aesthetic has made it a local architectural standout.
A popular swimming spot with families, it boasts a spacious 50m outdoor pool, a 25m indoor pool, toddler pools and a vibrant water play area complete with fountains, jets and splash pads.
And for those looking to channel their inner Tom Daley, there’s a dedicated dive pool with 1m and 3m springboards.
6. Elwood Beach, Elwood
Pitch your towel on Elwood Beach and take in the fabulous views of the Melbourne cityscape – especially striking at sunset, when the buildings are beautifully silhouetted against the sky.
Backed by a scenic walking and cycling path, it’s a popular spot for a seafront stroll. For even more panoramic views, grab a frozen treat from a nearby kiosk and hike up to Point Ormond for a stunning lookout over the city and bay.

7. Port Melbourne Beach, Port Melbourne

Its wide, flat expanse of sand is ideal for beach sports, while the calm waves make it a safe spot for swimming. And with the nearby Station Pier in view, you can while away an afternoon watching the majestic ships dock and depart.
It’s also one of Melbourne’s most accessible beaches, featuring wide footpaths, a Mobi-Mat, accessible toilets and tables with wheelchair seating cutouts. Making it a fun day out for everyone.
8. Half Moon Bay, Black Rock
Often considered Melbourne’s best beach, this attractive bay draws countless visitors every year.
A true escape from the city rush, the picturesque, crescent-shaped beach is backed by rugged cliffs and dotted with colourful beach huts.
Relatively clear water and soft sand make it ideal for paddling, swimming and even a spot of snorkelling around the historic HMVS Cerberus shipwreck resting in the bay. Kids also love exploring the rockpools, which are teeming with sea life.

9. Sorrento Beach, Mornington Peninsula
If you’re seeking a drive out of the city, Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula serves up 2 beach experiences in one stunning location.
Sorrento Front Beach offers calm, sheltered waters perfect for kids and paddleboarders. With BBQ facilities and plenty of picnic tables, it’s a great spot for a day out with family or friends.
On the wilder side, Sorrento Ocean Beach faces the open sea, where rugged cliffs and powerful waves attract surfers and adventurous walkers.

10. Ocean Grove Beach, Bellarine Peninsula
About 90 minutes southwest of Melbourne, you’ll find Ocean Grove Beach – one of the best surf spots within reach of the city.
Consistent, rolling waves make it the perfect spot for surfers of all levels, and regular surf patrols keep things safe during the warmer months.
Ocean Grove itself is a charming town, ideal for a post-surf wander among cafes, restaurants and coastal boutiques.
And, to wash the day down, there are several renowned wineries within a short drive.
11. Gumbuya World Theme Park, Tynong
If you’re looking for a fun-filled family day out, look no further than Gumbuya World – a waterpark, wildlife and theme park all in one.
