Heat up your holiday plans: Melbourne’s top 7 sweet spots to explore this summer

Sun’s out, hipster buns are out. There’s nothing quite like the Melbourne scene when the earth tips us into summer solstice. The buzz is electric. And so are all the fun activity options on offer. So whether you’re looking for some culture, a little adventure or just a place to spend a day with the kids or friends, we’ve got you covered. All day – and all night.

Sweet spots by day

Summer days in Melbourne feel nice and long – thanks to daylight savings!

But if your holidays (or at least the school holidays) feel a little too long, scoop up the cherubs or your friends and head out for a day of exploring.

1. The Enchanted Adventure

Ever wondered what it would be like to soar among the trees – or snuggle into them like a giant koala? Well, now you can live out that dream at Enchanted Adventure in Arthur’s Seat.

Just over an hour from the CBD, this magical land has the boldness of a Mad Hatter tea party!

With sprawling green landscapes, puzzles and a giant maze, this is one place you’ll be happy to lose your time in. And thanks to the delicious grab-and-go cakes, hot foods, sandwiches and ice-creams on offer, you certainly won’t go hungry either.

Feeling a little adventurous? Then strap yourself into a harness and shimmy your way up a ladder for a surf around the treetops.

Or if you’re after some more thrills, grab a tube and head up the hill for some downhill sliding action. Even if you don’t want a turn yourself, it’s worth checking out just to hear the children’s laughter.

2. The Studley Park Boathouse

Nestled along the Yarra River in Melbourne, Studley Park Boathouse (originally known as Burns Boat Shed) boasts a rich history dating back to 1863.

And is the oldest continually operating public boathouse on the Yarra.

Over the years, this iconic venue has survived floods, and moved and grown with the city's changing habits. Today, this vast estate has three separate dining areas that can cater to any mood or craving – whether it’s for breakfast, dinner, a casual meal, corporate event or wedding!

And while you’re there, be sure to bask in the river views – accessible from almost every vantage point on the property.

Want to get even closer to the water? Easy. Hire yourself a paddle boat or a single or double kayak. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the company of your loved ones – or simply nature’s serenity.

3. Melbourne Street Tours

If you love exploring and the arts, then Melbourne Street Tours will have a treat for you.

The only street art tour in Melbourne that’s led by real-life street artists, these passionate and talented guides will lead you through hidden laneways and arcades, showcasing some of the most interesting and coveted street art galleries in the world.

Your guide will teach you the creative stories behind some pieces, and the technical aspects such as spray-painting, stencil art and paste-ups. You’ll walk away with a new appreciation of the world of street art – and will never look at another mural the same again.

You may even leave feeling inspired to have a go. But just be sure to get permission from the wall’s owner first! ‘Tagging’ is not considered street art!

4. The Marshmallow Laser Feast

Do you enjoy pondering the big questions in life?

Wander into the Marshmallow Laser Feast’s ‘Works of Nature’ exhibit – all the way from its home in London – and let life’s mysteries unfold.

This virtual experience will take you beyond the limits of perception and connect you to the sublime wonders of our universe. As you enter, you’ll be immersed in the grandeur of four monumental digital artworks all brought to life by acclaimed filmmaker and executive producer, Terrence Malike.

Through guided meditations (narrated by Cate Blanchett), interactive displays and larger-than-life screen works uncover the hidden wonders that surround us – from the enchanting roots of Amazonian giants to the mysterious branches within our own bodies.

It’s a mesmerising experience that transcends our every day and shows that we’re all an integral – and equally irrelevant – aspect of the universe. All connected by the breath of life.

Sweet times by night

Sometimes if the sun is too hot, we don’t want to venture out until it starts to dip behind the horizon. But what to do after dark? Never fear! Melbourne’s got some solid options that are sure to please the whole clan.

5. The Slumber Safari at Werribee Zoo

Dreaming of an African safari but can’t quite find the time (or funds) to make it happen?

Well, there’s no need to get FOMO. Because there is a safari right here on your doorstep. And the best part? You can stay overnight!

Werribee Open Range Zoo is just 32km southwest of Melbourne’s CBD. And while many pop in for a day trip, there’s a unique add-on experience for the real animal lovers among us. The sensational Slumber Safari.

That’s right. You can spend the night in the luxury lodge, surrounded by hundreds of animals from 40 species that freely roam the zoo’s 560 acres of land.

Be spoilt with a guided safari and a behind-the-scenes animal tour. And devour a delicious African-inspired dinner and complimentary breakfast – recipient of many-a five-star review on TripAdvisor.

And while you’re having the experience of a lifetime, the money you spend will be going towards fighting wildlife extinction. It truly is a feel-good adventure for all involved.

6. The Abbotsford Supper Twilight Market

Unwind on the verdant lawns with a plate of crispy dumplings as the sun dips behind the spires of Abbotsford Convent. This Supper Market is your go-to Friday night destination this summer, offering a relaxed atmosphere and a feast for the senses.

Sip on a refreshing lychee beer as you browse through arts, crafts and fashion stalls, each with unique treasures to discover.

Then indulge your taste buds with a global culinary journey, from juicy chicken dumplings and hand-held buriyani at Himalayan Sherpa to the delectably mysterious Taiwanese Ghost Kitchen.

For a sweet finale, treat yourself to the fried lengths of hot chocolate goodness from Señor Churro. The Supper Twilight Market invites you to savour the flavours, embrace the ambience – and make your Friday summer nights unforgettable.

7. The Melbourne Moonlight Cinema

Want to see the Barbie movie – or a long list of blockbusters – lying in the Botanical Gardens under the stars? Honestly, who wouldn’t?

Then get out of your mojo dojo casa house and head to Melbourne’s Moonlight Cinemas.

Bring a picnic blanket and snacks or go premium with a pre-booked double bean bed up on the AAMI Gold Grass, where you can add a range of extras to your experience.

Or if you’re feeling uber fancy, book the exclusive hamper from Victoria’s High Country and enjoy a classic picnic selection with personalised waiter service straight to your seats – all night.

It’s the perfect way to spend a romantic evening for two, or a night with the whole crew!
