Thursday night fever: Inside the Gary Peer Social Club’s disco-themed bash

Dusting off our platforms and shining up our sequin jumpsuits, the Gary Peer Social Club took a step back in time at our latest event. And let’s just say we all caught disco fever. We caught up with social club Chairman – and undisputed dancing queen – Amanda Davenport, to get the 411 on the team’s trip to funky town.

The Gary Peer Social Club dream team

You may be wondering, what is the Gary Peer Social Club?

Well, if our family values are the heart of our business, the social club is the spirit – putting on incredible events every year.

One of those events is our Family Day – a carnival-type function where everyone is invited. The other is more of a party, just for social club members. Both of which are organised by the committee.

‘Of all our social club members, there are 5 of us on the committee,’ shares Amanda.

With her background in events, Amanda is typically at the helm – and we couldn’t be happier about it!

‘It’s in my nature to take the bull by the horns!’ She admits. ‘But the committee are always there to support me whenever I need it.’

A theme fit for Le Freaks

If there’s one thing you should know about the Gary Peer team, it’s that we love to dance. A fact the social club would never overlook.

‘We wanted this year’s party to be similar in energy to last year’s spring racing event, where everyone dressed up and hit the dance floor,’ Amanda shares. ‘Immediately, I thought of Studio 54.’

Amanda’s second thought? We do have some younger people on the team…

‘I was worried that the theme wouldn’t appeal to everyone, especially as some of our younger team members weren’t around when Studio 54 hit its peak,’ she recalls. ‘So, we changed the theme to ‘70s and 80s Disco’ to broaden the scope.’

But she never had to worry.

‘As soon as we put the invite out, people started planning their outfits,’ Amanda laughs.

Eat your heart out, Studio 54

Where better to host a disco-themed party than at Melbourne’s ritziest club?

If you asked Amanda, the answer is nowhere.

‘The Lounge in The Emerson is full of disco balls hanging from the ceiling, with a sunken dance floor and booths all around,’ she says. ‘I knew it would be perfect, so I booked it immediately and sent out the invites.’

Another plus? Its location.

‘We always try to keep our events local,’ shares Amanda. ‘And with The Emerson being right in the heart of South Yarra, it was like a home away from home. Especially when DJ Lyndon, who does all our events, showed up!’

Play that funky music

Here at Gary Peer, we’re always working pedal to the metal. So, it was important that this event presented an opportunity to have a boogie and really let our hair down.

And thanks to our special guests, it did so in spades.

‘From the second people started arriving, they were greeted with some of the best tracks in disco,’ Amanda says. ‘You should have seen Joanne Meldrum’s moves when Wham! came on!

‘But we did have another surprise up our sleeve…’

Come on. You didn’t actually think we’d host a disco party without inviting ABBA, did you?

‘Clad in white jumpsuits and platform boots, an ABBA cover band surprised our team with a performance they’ll never forget,’ says Amanda.

Who had the most slammin’ threads?

Let it be known that the Gary Peer team don’t do anything in halves. Just look at everyone’s outfits!

With mullets and afros all ‘round, it was hard to pick a favourite. But, as is the Gary Peer tradition, we’ve never been afraid to tackle a challenge head-on.

‘We had a voucher for the two best-dressed people, the only problem was choosing the winners!’ Amanda shares. ‘I was actually incredibly touched by how many people went all-out with their costumes. It made the judges’ jobs very hard.’

The judges in question? Gary Peer, Leon Gouzenfiter, Jenny Caughey, Leor Samuel and Jeremy Rosens. But, after some deliberation, they were able to reach a unanimous decision.

‘It was hard to go past an Elvis-ed out Anthony Lee and a 70s-ified Tania Crawley!’

Why the social club is stayin’ alive

After such a successful event, Amanda has, of course, been inundated with ‘that was so much fun!’ and ‘can’t wait for the next one!’ messages.

But, the Gary Peer Social Club has always been about more than that.

‘We have 7 separate offices here at Gary Peer,’ Amanda states. ‘And while we do always look for opportunities to come together – like our Team Nights every quarter – the social club is able to achieve that unity on a different level.

‘You’ll end up on the dance floor with someone you may have never met before, and by the end of the night, you just might have found yourself a new best friend,’ she continues.

No matter where they work.

‘It’s sales, it’s rentals, it’s admin,’ Amanda says. ‘It’s everyone mixing together to have a bit of fun.’

So, with another great social club event done and dusted, what’s next?

‘Oh, wait ‘til you hear about our plans for next year’s Family Day!’
